How long did it take to build castles.

It took about 10 years to build a stone castle. There had to be at least 400 stonemasons, 30 blacksmiths, 400 carriers, and 2000 labourers to build the castle and populate it. First they built a motte to make a hill for castle. To build the motte they would have to dig out a moat and pile the dirt up into the centre, creating a man-made hill. The motte had to be about 3-30meters in hight. When completed its slopes were covered with a thin layer of clay. Sometimes it was strengthened with timber supports or stones to prevent uneven settlements and slippage of earth to happen. The baily was built the same way, but it was much larger around and lower in hight.

Two samples of buildings:
1.Wooden Towers.
A wooden castle would take less days to build because the would was light and easier to get and transport. It took 50 builders to build a tower in 40 days, and the tower was 15m in width and 5m in hight.
2.Stone Towers.
The tower of a castle called Lange France. Built in the year 992. The tower was 16m in hight and 17m in width. Thickness of the stone walls was 1.5m. The length of time to build this tower was 1 year for 230 people.
